What they do
IonQ builds quantum computers based on trapped-ion technology, in which individual ytterbium ions are held in electromagnetic traps and manipulated with lasers to act as qubits. Trapped ions offer very high gate fidelity and all-to-all connectivity, and IonQ makes its systems available through Amazon Braket, Microsoft Azure Quantum and Google Cloud.
The company went public on the NYSE in 2021 via a SPAC merger and has since expanded into quantum networking through acquisitions. Its roadmap targets steadily rising algorithmic qubit counts and early commercial applications in chemistry, optimization and machine learning.
